The Spectrum - Student Newspaper
2020 Excellence in Journalism Recipients
“As crazy and unconventional as the first semester was at the Spectrum Newspaper, I cannot think of a better time to be the head of a newspaper where so much world-changing news is occurring, from the COVID-19 news across the world, to events happening within Sacred Heart’s campus, it was a thrill to be in the thick of it all. When we look back on 2020 many years from now, only then will we be able to fully understand how important this year was not only in the world’s history, but in our respective journalism careers. I cannot thank the editorial board enough for their dedication amid all the circumstances and their hard work to put together the best product week in and week out. I am looking forward to getting back to school in February and picking things back up where we left them in the first semester.

This semester was anything but a typical one. The Spectrum board and staff writers, through it all, were still able to produce professional articles that reported on events of our country as well as events that occurred within our Sacred Heart community. These topics ranged from COVID-19 updates, presidential debates and SNL skits to Ariana Grande's new album, athlete spotlights and students' opinions on the new Apple iPhone.
I would like to extend a thank you to our entire board of editors as well as all of our staff writers. This semester would not have been possible without the hard work of every single individual. Thank you to our Editor-in-Chief, Dan Gardella, and our advisor, Professor Kabak, for their constant dedication to this newspaper and encouraging everyone to produce their best work possible during such hectic times. Thank you so much, Shannon Szefinski |
A Note from Prof. KabakThe Spectrum is a publication that reports the news at Sacred Heart University through the unique voice of student editors and writers. Thanks to the support of CCO (The Council of Clubs and Organizations) and SCMA (School of Communication, Media and the Arts), Spectrum publishes each week for 22 weeks of the academic year, in print (when conditions permit) and online. This fall the staff includes 24 editors, 22 staff writers from the CM 211 classes, and contributors from across the university’s undergraduate majors.
Under its current name, Spectrum has been publishing continuously since 1983; prior to that it was published under the name Obelisk since 1963. In addition to writing and editing content, staff members support the publication through several other media areas, including photojournalism, public relations, advertising sales, and distribution. However, the data shows only part of the picture. What also makes Spectrum special is the passion and purpose applied to each issue on the part of the editorial board members and their staffs. |
The students practice their craft motivated by their commitment to using the best standards of accurate, objective journalism to tell the news about Sacred Heart itself and about the context of the times we live in. They do an awesome job.
It is my pleasure and honor to be their faculty advisor. Prof. Joanne Kabak Adjunct Faculty, SCMA |
