CM126: History of Adv. & PRProvides a critical overview of the history, purpose, and various methods related to advertising and public relations. Students analyze the semantic and syntactic properties of ads and public relations campaigns from the consumer point of view with special emphasis on how they communicate persuasively. Readings, screenings, and written assignments required.

CM227 - Adv. & Pr WritingStudents experiment with form and style in order to produce a variety of advertising and public relations writing for diverse audiences that utilize different media platforms by partnering with a (local) community organization to provide (PR/Advertising) service opportunities.

CM258 - Social Media StrategySocial media has altered how we communicate with each other. Students explore how social media has impacted culture as a whole, they interrogate the role of social media in the construction of personal and professional identity. Students also analyze corporate and non-profit uses of social media tools and tactics. Later in the semester, students will execute their own social media campaign.

Dr. Mark Congdon Jr. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Sacred Heart University. His research and teaching focuses on active learning and innovative teaching practices that increase the civic engagement and career readiness of students. Specifically, Mark centers Universal Design for Learning with a (critical) service-learning framework in his course designs. Mark’s research has been published in Communication Education, Communication Teacher, The Qualitative Report, and Partnerships: A Journal of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement, among others.
Dr. Congdon teaches PR and Advertising courses in the Department of Communication Studies. His courses are designed through a service-learning framework, where students gain hands-on experience partnering with local organizations and community partners to develop PR & Advertising materials. Through this hands-on experience, students develop a pre-professional portfolio to aid their career preparation. |
